- Think of your resume as your own personal advertisement. Like with any advertisement, you have to be able to market yourself and your specific qualifications against the competition. Your ability to market yourself both in your resume and during the interview process will distinguish you from others. Present your qualifications, achievements and experience in a manner that is focused and to the point. Be bold, aggressive and most important of all, be honest.
- If you are preparing a resume from scratch, before you write, take time to do a self-assessment on paper. Carefully outline your skills, abilities, work experience and interests. This will make it easier to prepare a thorough and detailed resume.
- If you do not have a lot of work experience, you should list your educational information first on your resume. Starting with the most recent and include your grades if they were better than average.
- Do your homework well when it comes to providing references. Always assume that the potential employer will contact your references. Whether you are using previous employers, past teachers, or friends as references, let them know in advance and of course, ask them if they are willing to provide a positive reference.
- The first contact you have with potential employers is your resume. This resume must be perfect in its visual presentation and quality of words. Have a friend review it, do a thorough spell check and proof read it.
- Employers are often looking for key words and phrases which make you stand out above the rest. Below are some ideas…..
Created a ……Proactive in ……, Improved company’s…….Pioneered the……Launched a ……Redesigned company’s……Orchestrated the development of ……Successfully led…….Provided vision…..Provided direction…….
- Always arrive at least 15 minutes before your interview, dress sharp and neat, be professional, give a firm handshake and introduce yourself in a clear manner. First impressions are ever lasting.
- When you are asked about your salary expectations, speak the truth. Don’t answer a question with a question. Be prepared ahead of time to answer this question. If you are flexible, say so. If you do have a figure in mind, then say it. Time is valuable. Don’t waste your or the potential employer’s time.
- Sections of your resume should include:
• Contact Information (on the top of the page) • Objectives or Summary • Educational Background • Work Experience • Volunteer Experience • Other Interests/Skills • References
- Be confident in your abilities. Believe in yourself. Set your goals and work hard to reach them.
